A Tasmanian Human Rights Act, 2022 stats, and an ambitious project

Here we are again heading towards the end of another year, my 2021 December blog included a summary of the year’s work so I will get to that, but I also want to mention the (fingers crossed) ramping up of momentum for a Human Rights Act in Tasmania.

I remember the push for a Tasmanian Human Rights Act years ago when I first worked for Equal Opportunity Tasmania. Now in 2022, QLD, ACT and Vic have rights protections but Tasmanians are still waiting. A Human Rights Act will go a very long way to greater justice and fairer outcomes in health, housing, education, employment, and justice for all of us, I attended a rally on the 26th of November and was impressed with so many individual causes coming together to campaign for an Act that will benefit all Tasmanians. Let’s hope Parliament listens this time. To read more about why we need a HRA have a look here Alliance for a Tasmanian Human Rights Act | Facebook

Training stats

I was completely surprised when I added up for stats for this past year and compared them to last year - there was quite a variance between some months but the overall totals were almost identical - curious - I wonder what 2023 will look like.

This year included more virtual training, more specialised content, a more diverse range of clients and industries, and more interstate travel (I’m actually writing this at the airport while waiting for my final trip away for the year). With the landmark Anti-Discrimination and Human Rights Legislation Amendment (Respect @ Work) Bill 2022 being passed and more pressure on organisations to demonstrate positive duty and protect their staff, I expect the influx of enquiries and bookings to continue.

My January project

I intend to take a few weeks off from mid-December and rather than my usual up-skill with a new course I plan to re-visit all the books on my shelf. Hmm, this is going to be interesting, some are well loved and dog-earred, some were bought with the best intentions and put aside for focused attention. Do I go right to left or just randomly start in the middle? I will include a review of my favourites in next month’s blog.

I hope everyone gets a chance to put their feet up and take some time doing whatever makes them happy over the New Year break. For those working over this period I hope your customers and clients are respectful and make you smile.

See you in 2023 :)
